The Oyo State Government, announced the arrest of 32 individuals, including two Chinese nationals over illegal mining. It was gathered that the suspected miners were arrested at Sooro market in Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area of the state. The state Director-General of Operation Burst, Col James Oladipo Ajibola, made this known, shortly after a security stakeholders�?meeting held at the Deputy Governor’s Office, Agodi in Ibadan. INFORMATION NIGERIA learnt that the state Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal had, during a clearance operation against the illegal miners at the market, over the weekend, ordered its closure and immediate evacuation of all illegal structures and shanties built across the market and the precious stones. Ajibola explained that the collaborative efforts of traditional leaders and the joint security task force enabled the instant restoration of peace and order in the area.

He said: “About 32 illegal miners, including two Chinese migrants, were arrested at the Kishi-Sooro market and are currently undergoing investigation at the moment.�?/p> Earlier, the State Government had announced the closure of the market over the activities of illegal miners in the market. The Executive Assistant to State Governor, Seyi Makinde on Security, retd CP Sunday Odukoya, who addressed newsmen warned that the government would not hesitate to pounce on any individual involved in illegal mining activities in the state. He said: “We just had an intensive meeting on security over the illegal mining happening in Oke-Ogun, especially in Sooro in Irepo Local Government.

“The government has taken its position which means that everybody has to stand up to their responsibility to ensure adequate peace in the region. “The Kabiesi, Iba of Kishi, Oba Mashoud Lawal has promised to make sure the area is free of hoodlums and that all the criminalities within his area will definitely come to an end.

“The government will not relent in ensuring that the area remains peaceful and the market remains closed until further directive is given by the State Governor, Seyi Makinde.�?/p>

The Nigeria Football Federation, has officially unveiled Finidi George as the new coach of the Super Eagles. In a post on his X handle on Monday, Atiku shared a picture of him shaking hands with his 2019 election running mate, with the caption, “It was my honour and privilege to host @PeterObi today.”

Obi was also reported to have met with Sule Lamido, a former Jigawa State governor and PDP stalwart, earlier in the day. Recall that at last year’s polls, the former Vice-President was the first runner up behind Tinubu, while Obi, the former Anambra State governor, came third. The outcome of the election was followed by legal battles at the tribunal and Supreme Court which both upheld the election victory of the former Lagos State governor. Recently, political economist, Pat Utomi, had hinted of mega political party on the works to regain power from the APC in 2027. Utomi told newsmen that the redemption of the country could not be achieved by the ruling APC, or any of the opposition parties.

In January 2024, Utomi said he had held diacussions with leaders of some opposition parties and some of the presidential candidates in the 2023 general elections, on plans to form a new mega political party that would take power from the ruling APC in 2027.

According to him, the present political parties have failed Nigerians as they have not added value to nation-building, hence the planned mega party is to disrupt the current political order and deliver that impactful leadership the country truly deserves.

In one of the videos, the victim was seen being slapped repeatedly by another female student while asking “Who broke my heart?�?/p> In another video, the victim was shown sitting next to a male classmate who was heard saying “I spoilt her relationship” However, the lawsuit, filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory under case number FCT/HC/CV/2341/24: MISS NAMTIRA BWALA v LEAD BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL LTD, seeks damages from the educational institution for its alleged failure to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for the plaintiff. According to a public statement sighted by Punch and published on Monday by Marvin Omorogbe, the founding partner of the law company representing Bwala, the legal action is intended to hold the school accountable for its negligent conduct in relation to the highly publicised incident. The lawsuit further requested, “the Defendant to issue a public apology to the Clamant in two national daily newspapers.

“An order directing the Defendant to pay the Claimant the sum of N500,000,000.00 (Five Hundred Million Naira) as general damages for the Defendant’s breach of the duty of care it owes to the Claimant, and its negligent conduct in failing to prevent the assault, torment, emotional distress, pain, trauma and breach of privacy suffered by the Claimant while under the Defendant’s custody and supervision.�?/p>

The legal company highlighted that its client hoped the case would spark significant improvements and lead to the adoption of suitable safeguards to stop such incidents from happening in the future within the school premises. “Our client hopes that this lawsuit will bring about drastic changes and adequate measures to prevent a reoccurrence of similar issues in the school,�?the statement added.

Richard “Rick” Slayman, 62, the first man to undergo a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, died two months after the procedure. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), which performed the operation in March, reported his death on Saturday, May 11.
They stated that there was no evidence that his death was the result of the transplant. Other organ transplants from genetically engineered pigs had previously failed, but the procedure on Mr Slayman, who had end-stage renal illness, was hailed as a watershed moment. In addition to kidney illness, Mr Slayman suffered from Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. He received a human kidney transplant in 2018, but it failed five years later. Following his pig kidney transplant on March 16, his physicians certified that he no longer required dialysis because the replacement organ was found to be operating properly.
“Mr Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation,” MGH said in a statement on its vai de bet:official website.

The Director warned that parents of convicted Yahoo boys who colluded in the forgery of documents would face legal consequences. He disclosed that Edo State ranks second only to Lagos in terms of convictions, a fact that he deemed alarming and damaging to the state’s reputation.

They have lost their rights to remain members of the Assembly. “In the case of Adetunde and the Labour Party, the Supreme Court made it clear that you cannot decamp and then remain a member of a legislative house in Nigeria unless you can show that there is a division in your party. Today, the PDP is one,” he said.

Before the House can conduct proceedings, the House must form a quorum to conduct the business of the House, and a quorum in the Constitution is defined. “But if you want to remove the governor by way of impeachment, again you must have a two-thirds majority of the legislature. This is very clear,” Falana added.

To my dismay, the bank closed at its designated closing time, while I was still inside, only to hear the repeated announcement of no network, no network.�?/em>

“After departing from the bank, I pondered on the method to obtain my bank statement. The following day, Friday morning, was the deadline for submitting that specific document, along with the other documents I had already gathered. Hence, I composed a tweet stating, Dear Zenith Bank, I am experiencing a prolonged network outage. Could you please provide an update?�?/em>

“So, it now dawned on me that this one that technology is moving very fast and some of us are old school and not catching up, I thought that was a good suggestion. So I agreed to what the person said, and the person now sent a number that I should chat with them on Whatsapp.�?/em>

“So I went on Whatsapp and the Whatsapp had a verified blue tick with the Zenith Bank logo. So the person now said just fill this link and we’ll send the email to you in less than 30 minutes. I’m usually very careful. I’ve been very careful about these internet things being that I’m not so knowlegeable about it so the fear of falling for something I don’t know, I ignore anything that makes me click link or anything. I even hardly do online shopping.�?/em>

“So after I now entered my details into the link the person sent me to get the email, I now said let me take a nap. After a few minutes again, I saw that I had different notifications from different platforms. So I entered the email because I was anxious for that bank statement. When I entered the email is when I now saw an email from Zenith Bank telling me that somebody is trying to log into my app.�?/em>

“Immediately I entered my text messages and I saw that I had quite a number of them. I checked and then I saw that the text messages were a range of alerts. They removed the money in bits and with different names.�?/em>

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has posited that the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara can not change the sitting venue of the State House of Assembly. On his disagreement with the Governor, Alabo said he couldn’t have taken sides with Fubara because he did not fulfil his side of the peace agreement initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Part of the resolution was that the budget should be represented to the House of Assembly. According to him, he resigned from the cabinet of Fubara because the State was spending money without appropriation. Five lawmakers loyal to Fubara had approved N800 billion as the state’s budget for the 2024 fiscal year, but a Federal High Court in Abuja nullified it. The Court asked the Governor to re-present the budget to the constituted House of Assembly under Speaker Martin Amaewhule – an ally of Wike. Alabo said it was a breach of the procurement law for him to be awarding contracts when there was no budget. His words: “Part of the resolution was that the budget should be re-presented to the correct house of assembly. Was that done up till now? No. “So if there is no appropriation, if there is no budget, how are you spending? That is my worry. “How can I serve in that kind of government? I will be picked up one day, because you have immunity. I am approving projects and signing award letters without appropriation which is a breach of a procurement law.
“I don’t have immunity so I can be picked. Probably that could have been one of the reasons for my resignation.�?/p>

The Benue State Police Command has prohibited the concealing of vehicle and motorbike number plates, stating that it is a crime and will not be permitted in the state. The state Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Steve Yabanet, issued this warning in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO SP Catherine Anene, and made accessible to journalists in Makurdi on Sunday.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria to suspend the implementation of the cybersecurity levy policy. The directive is coming, following the decision of the House of Representatives, which asked the CBN to withdraw its circular directing all banks to commence charging a 0.5 per cent cybersecurity levy on all electronic transactions in the country. Recall that the apex bank on May 6, 2024, issued a statement mandating all banks, mobile money operators, and payment service providers to implement a new cybersecurity levy, following the provisions laid out in the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) (Amendment) Act 2024. INFORMATION NIGERIA learnt that financial institutions are required to apply the levy at the point of electronic transfer origination. The statement reads: “All other Financial Institutions (Microfinance Banks, Primary Mortgage Banks, Development Financial Institutions) �?Within eight weeks of the issuance of the Circular.” However, some sources, on Sunday, with knowledge of Tinubu’s position on the issue told PUNCH that the President was aware of the economic burden on Nigerians since his hardline economic reforms began last May, adding that he did not want to risk adding to the burden with more levies. A senior presidency official who preferred not to be named said: “The President is sensitive to what Nigerians feel. And he will not want to proceed with implementing a policy that adds to the burden of the people.
“So, he has asked the CBN to hold off on that policy and ordered a review. I would have said he ordered the CBN, but that is not appropriate because the CBN is autonomous. But he has asked the CBN to hold off on it and review things again.�?/p>

“You know he (Tinubu) was not around when that directive was being circulated. And he does not want to present his government as being insensitive. The Kogi State Government says some students abducted from the Confluence University of Science? and Technology (CUSTEC) Osara have regained freedom.
According to the government, the kidnappers “succumbed to superior firepower and escaped with gun wounds.” Recall that on Thursday, gunmen invaded the university and abducted students who were preparing for their examinations. The State had said nine students were missing after the attack. Governor of the State, Usman Ododo, also visited the institution and assured parents of his commitment to rescue the students. He revealed that the closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the school were switched off on the night of the attack, signifying a possible internal conspiracy. However, in a statement issued on Sunday, Kingsley Fanwo, Commissioner for Information, said some of the students have been rescued by a joint team of security operatives and hunters. He also did not disclose the specific number of students rescued.

Fanwo added that security agents are “currently combing the forests�?to rescue the remaining students in captivity. Meanwhile William Aya, police spokesperson in the State said on Sunday morning that 14 students have been rescued. “This is to inform the general public that some of the students abducted by gunmen at the Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara have been rescued safely by local hunters and other security agents. “Local vigilante men and security agents engaged the kidnappers in a fierce shootout and the kidnappers succumbed to superior firepower and escaped with gun wounds, leaving the kidnapped students who also ran in different directions to avoid being caught up in the fire exchange. “Many of the students kidnapped and even other people in captivity have been rescued and taken to medical facilities for proper attention, while many others were also rescued in the early hours of today,” he detailed. He said a hunter and DSS operative sustained injuries during the firefight with the kidnappers, adding that they are receiving medical attention.

Four people are said to have been slain by suspected gunmen on Friday, May 10, in the Mbachon and Mbagbe towns in Turan, Yaav Council Ward, Kwande local government area, Benue state. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), posited that he made a mistake in supporting Siminalayi Fubara to emerge as his successor. Speaking on Saturday at the grand civic reception held at Ogu-Bolo in honour of Chief George Thompson Sekibo, Wike begged for God’s forgiveness as well as the people’s forgiveness for making an error in judgment.
Vowing to correct his mistake at the right time, he said: ”I want to say this clearly, in life we have made a mistake. I have made a mistake. I own it up and I say God forgive me. I have said all of you forgive me. But we will correct it at the appropriate time. I am a human, I am bound to make a mistake. So forgive me for making a wrong judgement. So nobody should kill.�?/p> Speaking further on the current political crisis rocking Rivers State, Wike called out the camp of Governor Fubara, saying no injunctions obtained at 2am or 4am would stop the law and due process from taking its course in the state. “If they like they can go to anybody by 2am or 4am to get injunction. The law will take its course. We must follow due process,�?Wike said.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, says ?he ??is ready to go through probe over the controversy surrounding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
According to him, there is nothing to hide about the project, stating that due process was followed and the necessary approvals and documentation were obtained for the project to commence. Recall that the House of Representatives on Thursday resolved to probe the N15 trillion project and said it would set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the project and submit a report within four weeks. The House’s resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved during plenary by Austin Achado, the member representing Gwer East/Gwer West Federal Constituency of Benue State.

Solomon Dalung, a former Minister of Youth and Sports, has recounted how a hospital abandoned him for hours because of the non-payment of the admission deposit. According to him, he would have been dead if not that he briefly regained consciousness and transfer the deposit to the hospital from his bank app.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, has placed a N10 million boun?ty on the killers of two p??olice operatives in the State.
The State Police Command had disclosed on May 7 that two policemen and three members of the neighbourhood watch were killed during a crisis that erupted in Iggah community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the State. Some gunmen also killed two police officers attached to the Ogui Divisional Headquarters in the command on Friday. Briefing newsmen after a security council meeting at the government house on Saturday, Mbah said the State would go after the culprits with every resource at its disposal. On the possible culprits, Mbah said available information pointed to men of the Eastern Security Network (ESN). He called on members of the public to be on the lookout for the criminals and the exhibits, and report same to security agencies. Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State has informed that preliminary investigations point to internal sabotage in the abduction of students in the State. Recall that on Thursday, some gunmen invaded the Confluence University of Science and Technology Osara, Kogi, around 9pm and abducted students who were preparing for their examinations. The state government had confirmed nine students were missing after the attack. Speaking on Saturday when he visited the university campus for assessment, Ododo said the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed in the school were switched off on the day of the attack. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), on Friday, disclosed that it has uncovered and is actively dismantling a syndicate issuing fake National Identity Numbers (NINs) to unsuspecting Nigerians. NIMC Director General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during a press briefing in Abuja, disclosed that several suspects involved in the fraudulent scheme have been arrested and are currently facing prosecution. Members of the syndicate were apprehended following a complaint from a customer who reported paying N120,000 to modify her birth certificate, a service fraudulently offered by individuals posing as NIMC employees. “This data does not come to our server and a lot of Nigerians have been scammed,�?Coker-Odusote said, emphasizing the gravity of the issue. The DG further revealed that, as of May 2024, the NIN database had successfully enrolled over 107.34 million Nigerians, a significant increase from 104 million in December 2023. The NIN has become an essential tool for enhancing security, governance, and service delivery across various government platforms. Coker-Odusote detailed how the syndicate operated, often masquerading as business vendors or cyber café operators. They crafted links, developed software, and generated fake NINs, duping many into believing they were legitimate.

The operation was sophisticated. The fake data never reached the official NIMC servers, thereby eluding immediate detection. The discovery of the fraud ring prompted further investigations, which identified additional suspects operating around NIMC’s annex office. Coker-Odusote expressed her frustration with the ongoing extortion and data breaches. The NIMC boss, however, declined to disclose details on the number of persons being interrogated but assured that as soon as the investigation is concluded they would be charged to court for cybercrimes. Odusote said, “I am going to speak on extortion, data breach and privacy. When we carried out our investigations, we discovered that around NIMC’s offices, people were parading as business vendors and cyber cafes, creating links for unsuspecting persons, designing software and generating fake NINs for people. “This data does not come to our server and a lot of Nigerians have been scammed. We record an influx of crowd, people coming into the office telling us that they registered but we can’t find their data on the system. We have a lot of these instances with citizens claiming to have paid money to people who do not have any connection to NIMC. “They (offenders) have perfected the act of trying to mimic what NIMC does. So we decided to clamp down on these people and have arrested offenders. These persons don’t have any connection with the commission at all. Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, says he will soon make public the forensic audit report which indicted the administration of former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of diverting billions of state funds meant for projects to individ?ual company accounts.

In the bank statement on the 26th of September 2020 when people were dealing with COVID-19, a debit went into the state account for N10 billion and it was payment for an 80 per cent contract of the Abia airport. “It’s true and incontrovertible. The statement is there, the report is there. By the way, the report will be published very soon. “But I can assure you that as reported by the media, it’s KPMG that did the forensic audit. “So, clearly something went wrong. Our engagement with the company that received the money gives the impression that the company was deceived. The Managing Director of the company said that he told them that he had never built an airport before and that it is not his area of competence neither did he apply to them to construct an airport.” The governor equally stated that his government was not bordered over the defections in droves by PDP members to APC in the state. A senior lecturer at the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, was, on Friday, stripped down to his boxers, following accusations of making sexual advances towards a female student. Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, has issued an executive order moving the sitting of the State House of Assembly to the?? Government House.
The document was sent to newsmen by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Boniface Onyedi, on Friday. The gazette dated December 14, 2023, cited the explosion recorded at the State Assembly on October 29, 2023, as the reason for the relocation. The Governor said the sitting of the state parliament will henceforth take place at the government house until the assembly complex, which was affected by fire in October, is renovated. “That on the 29th day of October 2023, a fire incident occasioned by unknown persons burned and damaged the hallowed chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly. “That the Hallowed Chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly in its present state is unsafe and constitutes a threat to the lives of the staff and the Honourable members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and thus not conducive for the business and proceeding of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The gazetting of the order comes in the wake of a renewed political crisis in the oil-rich State.

The Kogi State Government, on Friday, disclosed that nine students have been confirmed missing after the attack by gunmen on Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTEC), Osara. Recall that the gunmen invaded the university around 9pm on Thursday and abducted students who were preparing for their examinations. State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, told newsmen that the state has deployed security operatives and hundreds of local hunters into the bushes in pursuit of the kidnappers. He added that security agents have also been positioned around the school. “Hundreds of local hunters, who understand the terrain, as well as the conventional security agents, are currently combing the area to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students who were kidnapped from their classrooms.

He further commended the local hunters and other security agents for engaging the abductors on the night of the invasion. A State High Court in Port Harcourt has granted an interim injunction restraining Martin Amaewhule from parading himself as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. In a Friday ruling, Charles Wali, the Presiding Judge, also restrained 25 other assembly members, loyal to former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, from parading themselves as legislators. The motion ex parte was filed by the factional Speaker, Victor Jumbo and two assembly members �?Sokari Goodboy and Orubienimigha Timothy �?loyal to Siminialayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers. The suit listed 25 lawmakers as 1st to 25th defendants and the Governor of Rivers, the Attorney-General, and the state’s Chief Judge as 26th to 28th defendants.

In its ruling, the court stopped the Governor, the Attorney-General, and the Chief Judge from interacting with the affected lawmakers.

The court further ordered “substituted service on the lawmakers within seven days from the date by substituted means to wit by pasting at the entrance gate of the Rivers state house of assembly legislative quarters�? The Rivers House of Assembly has been conflicted since 2023 following the rift between Fubara and Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Trade Union Congress has berated the opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly over their quietness on controversial cybersecurity levy.
